Ofsted's optional early years self-evaluation form no longer exists since 1st April. A new section on self-evaluation, and a quality improvement plan, is now included in the online downloads section of this publication.

Effective teaching and learning is underpinned by a reflective approach to observation, assessment and planning. This publication aims to be a practical guide for practitioners who are tasked with providing high quality teaching and learning experiences for the children in their care.

Our aim is to remind practitioners of the need to refer to important principles about learning and development and to reflect upon how these in turn shape practice in their provision. Practitioners (in particular, key persons) will be taken through the processes of meaningful observation, planning and assessment — in other words the process of ‘planning’ for teaching and learning. Our own experience and research tells us that this is where truly effective practice is to be found and is in fact supported by the EYFS with its emphasis on good quality teaching and learning based upon the unique child’s abilities and needs.

This book will encourage for observation, assessment and planning, to be carried out in a way that really does support effective teaching and learning. We will explain why we believe that this can only happen when the setting has a clearly defined methodology, whether it is based on a specific approach to the curriculum, or drawn from a range of theories and perspectives; the important factor will always be that practitioners have a reflective approach to their work and use their reflective skills to shape learning programmes based on an understanding of children’s unique development pathways.
